Jo Morrison has been based in Nepal for over 15 years, implementing, evaluating and advising on community-based interventions to improve maternal and child health and nutrition in Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Malawi, Niger and Thailand. Her research often focuses on gender imbalances and how these affect women’s access to health care, and health outcomes. She has examined the role of gender in a government policy to improve access to care through local recruitment of nurses, and is now examining how gender affects supervision of mid-level health workers in the context of her MRC health systems research grant in rural Nepal. Two of her current projects include researching child marriage, both self-initiated and arranged. She is interested in how to promote gender equity through female support networks of early-career researchers in low-income country research settings.
