The UCL Centre for Gender and Global Health
Peter Aggleton is a sociologist and educationalist with a background in policy studies, international development, psychology and health.
He has worked with national and international agencies for over thirty years to strengthen responses to HIV and sexual health. This included senior level work with UNAIDS, UNESCO, UNFPA, WHO and other agencies and lead contributions to World AIDS Campaigns on stigma, discrimination and human rights, and on men and masculinity.
Prior to moving to Australia in 2012, Peter worked at the University of Sussex (where he was the inaugural Head of the School of Education and Social Work) and at the Institute of Education in London (where he was Director of the Thomas Coram Research Unit and for a while Dean of Research). Before that, he held a senior position as chief of social and behavioural studies and support within the World Health Organisation’s former Global Programme on AIDS in Geneva.
Peter is editor-in-chief of three international journals: Culture, Health & Sexuality, Health Education Journal and Sex Education, and is an associate editor of the journals AIDS Education & Prevention, Global Public Health and Health Education Research.
In addition to his honorary position within in the UCL Centre for Gender and Global Health, Peter is an emeritus professor in the Centre for Social Research in Health at UNSW Sydney, a distinguished honorary professor in the College of Arts and Social Sciences at The Australian National University in Canberra, and an adjunct professor in the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society at La Trobe University in Melbourne.
